Is Mango Safe for French Bulldogs?

can French bulldogs eat mango

Yes, mango is 100% safe to feed a French bulldog and it is also healthy as it can provide fiber, vitamin C, and other phytonutrients that are good for your pet.

However, as with anything, moderation is key.

The query can French bulldogs eat mango could also bring different answers. That is because, some pets that have overeaten mangos are known to have vomited or even suffered diarrhea and loose/watery stools.

Naturally, if these signs do occur, you must cut back on feeding this tropical fruit to your fur buddy. As with any new food, check with your vet if it is okay to feed it to your pet.

Also, many experts believe that you should never feed any human foods to dogs.

However, there are others that believe certain human food, in moderation, are okay to feed to pooches and could even benefit them.

Furthermore, as stated earlier, some parts of mango are not safe to feed a Frenchie. I will discuss this in subsequent sections.

Can French Bulldogs Eat Mango Peels/Skin?

can French bulldogs eat mango

Some people love eating mango skin or peels.

However, I would not recommend feeding them to dogs since they have a leathery texture. Many dogs do not chew their food properly and that can put them at a risk of choking over these rubbery peels.

Moreover, peels of the mango fruit are very difficult to digest.

Some people and dogs have also known to have an allergic reaction to mango skin due to the urushiol compound found on the skin of the fruit.

Urushiol is an oily resin found in certain fruits, leaves, plants and flowers. It is the same sticky substance found in poison ivy, poison oak, and sumac.

The moment this substance touches human skin, it can cause severe swelling, blisters, itching and rashes. The same could happen to dogs that accidentally lick urushiol on the mango’s skin.

Accidentally consuming this sticky residue can cause vomiting, stomach ache, and other debilitating symptoms.

That is why, it is best to refrain from feeding mango peels to pets. Also, you must thoroughly wash the mango to remove the urushiol resin which is generally present at the top of the fruit where the stem is present.

After washing, please discard the top portion as well as the peel and only feed the inner sweet and fleshy part to your Frenchie.

Mango ice cream is okay to feed your Frenchie – in moderation.

Remember: commercial mango ice cream contains a lot of sugar. Sugar, in excess, can cause a spike in your pet’s blood sugar levels.

Moreover, it contains milk or cream and many Frenchies are lactose intolerant. This means that they cannot digest milk properly and could even suffer from gas, bloating, or indigestion due to it.

Dogs with diabetes or IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) must also avoid mango ice cream as this food can aggravate their symptoms.

If you want, you can feed some homemade mango ice cream made using mango pulp, almond milk, and honey. Freeze the mixture in ice trays and feed your pet.

Can French Bulldogs Eat Dried Mango?

Dried mango is nothing but dehydrated mango pieces. You could feed them to your pet but the store-bought ones tend to have a lot of sugar on them.

Even if you make dried mango at home, it can be a bit stiff and chewy.

A young pet could choke on it, so it is best to only feed fresh mango to your Frenchie.

What Are The Side Effects of Feeding Mango to French Bulldogs?

Most French bulldogs are able to digest mangoes quite well.

This is only if you practice moderation. In excess, the fruit could cause adverse effects such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Stomach pain
  • Upset stomach
  • Indigestion
  • Bloating
  • Reduced appetite.

These signs may show up in your Frenchie within 24-48 hours after eating mango. If the symptoms do not improve over the next few days, then please see your vet.

Also, mangoes are calorific and they contain sugar, so, in excess, it could cause weight gain in your Frenchie. As always, remember that treats and snacks should not exceed 10% of your Frenchie’s total daily recommended calorie-intake.

How Much Mango Can French Bulldogs Eat?

can French bulldogs eat mango

Vets recommend that treats and snacks should not exceed 10% of the total calorie intake of a dog’s diet.

French bulldogs weigh about 25 lb. and their total calorie intake per day should be about 600 calories. This means that treats or snacks should not exceed 60 calories per day.

Mangoes contain nearly 99 calories per cup. That is why you must feed only 1/4th cup of mango to your Frenchie. Reduce this quantity even more if you feed other treats like dentastix to your pet.

Exceeding this amount can cause weight gain and also a spike in their blood sugar levels. So, practice moderation and feed mango only once or twice a week.
